Railway industry increases forecast
15/07/2010 - Reuters/Brasil Online
The Brazilian industry of railway materials increased its forecast for production of cars in 2010, after a sales performance on the first semester that exceeded the previous annual estimate, said the president of the association that gathers the segment’s companies, Abifer.
The previous estimate from the entity, disclosed in the beginning of the year, was for a production of 2,000 to 2,500 cars in 2010, after a volume of 1,022 units manufactured in 2009. However, the portfolio of orders for the year ended the first semester with 2,650 cars, said in an interview to Reuters the president of Abifer, Vicente Abate.
“After the first semester’s performance, we increased the forecast of production for this year to 2,500 to 3,000 cars,” he stated.
The movement reflects a resume in the demand from the segments of mining, grains, sugar and fertilizers, after the 2009 production was affected by the international financial crisis, which impacted orders.
In terms of sales, the director expects that the sector has better sales than the 2.6 billion Reais in 2008, a figure that includes, in addition to wagons, locomotives, cars and other railway equipment items.
“It may exceed 2008 in 10 per cent," said Abate. In 2009, the sale was of 2.1 billion Reais.
