Hauling out the sugarcane harvest
Since their origin, most railroads were built in Brazil for transporting agricultural production. Sugarcane was vital for the laying of the tracks in the Northeast, especially in the states of Pernambuco, Alagoas and Paraíba. In the Northeast as well as the region of Campos, in Rio de Janeiro, true railroad systems were built to run between the mills and the sugarcane plantations of neighboring municipalities
