Until the 2016 Olympics, the forecast is R$ 360 million in investments in the expansion and modernization of manufacturing facilities, implementing new technologies and manpower training of the Brazilian rail industry. Who said that was the president of the Brazilian Association of Railway Industry (Abifer), Vicente Abate, on 27 May, during a meeting of the Business Council of Logistics and Transport of the Commercial Association of Rio de Janeiro (ACRJ). According to him, by 2020, the amount of cars on tracks for passengers should double from 2 thousand to 4 thousand.
According to Abate, the railroad industry does not have the necessary investment because it suffers from a lack of projects resulting in increased cost and delay in execution of works. “Political will exists, there are resources, sometimes the projects are lacking. The idea is to create a database project so that, when there is need, resort to projects and then we accelerate the process, “he said.
To the Abifer president, the major industry challenge today is firstly to take advantage of the local content the most possible way to generate employment and income in Brazil. “After that, we can promote the expansion of the rail transport for passengers and load, meaning, actions from the private sector together with the government so that transport grows sustainably”.
The chairman, Eduardo Rebuzzi, stressed that all modes are important within the transport. Thus, it cannot have a fully unbalanced transport matrix.
“We need all modes to be developed and integrated. For the port to work, for example, rail, air and road transportation have to work very well, because we have charge for all types and each type of transportation. Today we see resurgence in the rail industry in Brazil; this is very important to a country that has been growing on more solid foundations. We cannot, on the national logistics infrastructure scope, leave the railways out, “he concluded.
