Rumo hosted the II Railway Social Action Workshop on June 17-18 at Senai in Cubatão (SP). The meeting brought together representatives from the country’s leading railway concessionaires to discuss matters related to territorial management, safety, and relations with communities located in the vicinity of ferrovias.
With support from the National Association of Railway Transporters (ANTF) and MoveInfra, the event featured participation from representatives of Ferrovia Interna do Porto de Santos (FIPS), MRS, VLI, TLSA, Fico, Vale, and Rumo. During the two-day program, participants shared experiences, discussed common challenges, and explored strategies to enhance safety, improve territorial management, and promote greater integration between companies and communities.
According to Silvia Azuma, Rumo’s Social Responsibility Manager, the meeting reflected a shift in how concessionaires operate in the territories served by the ferrovia. “Beyond understanding the impacts of operations, we seek to understand community priorities, strengthen trust relationships, and build solutions together. This meeting demonstrates that concessionaires face similar challenges and that sharing experiences is essential to generate more consistent results for people and for the ferrovia,” she stated.
The discussions covered topics such as territorial management, social license to operate, railway safety, private social investment, and impact indicators. The goal was to build a joint vision to improve concessionaire performance in regions served by the railway mode.
At the end of the meeting, participants developed an integrated plan focused on generating shared value between operators and communities and strengthening dialogue with the territories. The recommendations produced will serve as the basis for the planning of participating companies and focus on safety, impact mitigation, and value generation in areas served by the ferrovias.
Project in Baixada Santista
As an example of this strategy, Rumo presented the Movimenta Baixada program, an initiative aimed at strengthening the protagonism of residents in communities located in the vicinity of the railway network in Baixada Santista.
The project operates in partnership with various organizations and develops community listening and mobilization processes to identify local demands and guide actions focused on development, culture, and opportunity generation.
According to data collected by the program, community safety was identified as a priority by 29.3% of respondents. This finding guided the planning of the company’s actions in the region.
The information obtained also integrates Rumo’s socio-environmental strategy for the more than 500 municipalities where the company operates.
