Our History
Revista Ferroviária was launched in January 1940 in Rio de Janeiro by engineer Rubem Vaz Toller, from the Central do Brasil Railway (EF Central do Brasil). Rubem was the son of Jacinto Toller, owner of the Pimenta de Melo printing house, which, among other publications, printed the political magazine O Malho.
Revista Ferroviária emerged as the official publication of the powerful Association of Engineers of the Central do Brasil Railway. At the time of the magazine’s launch, the association had just completed the electrification of Rio de Janeiro’s suburban rail network. Shortly thereafter, Rubem’s brother-in-law, Jorge Moraes Gomes, took over the magazine and founded a publishing company, Empresa Jornalística dos Transportes Ltda. Jorge led Revista Ferroviária for 43 years, transferring its management in 1983 to his son, journalist Gerson Toller Gomes, who remained in the position until his passing in 2014. In that same year, Claudinei Carvalho assumed the magazine’s leadership.
Revista Ferroviária is the oldest Brazilian publication produced by a private publisher with regular (bimonthly) circulation. It covers current developments in the railway, metro, and metropolitan transport sectors in Brazil and is also committed to the preservation of railway assets of historical interest.
In parallel, the publishing house organizes annual events such as the Revista Ferroviária Award, publishes the RF Yearbook and the Map of Brazil’s Railways, and produces Pod nos Trilhos, a videocast program. It has also developed, with support from the Rouanet Law, the Railway Memory Project.
