MRS Logistica is going to intensify is accident prevention program at the level crossings along its network, which embraces 1,700 km between São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais, during ‘National Traffic Week’, which happens until September the 25th.
The numbers show MRS’s preoccupation with the accidents reduction: in August, the company reached a low of 5,5 accidents/million of trains/km. In the first semester of this year, the mark was of 10 accidents/millon of trains/km – two thirds below the limit established by the National Agency of Terrestrial Transport (ANTT), wich is of 28 accidents/millon of trains-km.
The campaign embraces 140 points at the main level crossings, where more than 2 million flyers are being distributed. “While the automobiles wait to cross the train line, groups os people organized by MRS will distribute the informative kit and will reinforce the importance of following the signalling”, informs Jussara Araújo, social relations analyst for MRS Logistics.
“A train of 132 loaded cars, the longest operated by MRS, for example, running at 30 Km/h, is going to need 250 meters to stop”, Jussara alerts. That explains why the level crossing barriers are closed with so much antecedence. Beyond the personal risk, the Brazilian Traffic Code, article 212, foresees very high fine for the drivers who stops on the track.
In 2004, the company invested about R$ 800 thousand in the level crossing improvement, to reinforce pedestrians’ and drivers’ safety.
