Car sales in Brazil should double in 2010

The Brazilian supplier of railway equipment estimates sales of about 2000-2500 wagons in 2010, at least the double registered last year, according to the Brazilian Association of Railway Suppliers, ABIFER.

In 2009, the costumers of the Brazilian railway supplier – pressed by the economic recession – reduced their orders. With this scenario, the sector’s sales totaled US$ 1.17 billion, as Vicente Abate, president of ABIFER, told Reuters on Monday (1).

The total commercialized wagons in 2009 were 1.022 units. The income of the railway industries takes into account not only wagons, but locomotive, cars and other railway equipment as well. The figure does not include the expenditure on rails, which are imported.

Despite the annual growth on wagons, the industry will still be far away from its historic record achieved in 2005, with 7249 wagons, and still below the 5118 units sold in 2008, according to ABIFER.

According to Abate, the wagons this year will supply the growing demand on the mining, grain, sugar and fertilized sectors.
In 2010, the crisis has gone. We are talking about US$ 168 million to US$ 224 million more on the sales of the sector this year, Abate said.

The expectation for passenger cars is to sell 500 to 550 units, after the 438 sold in 2009. On the locomotive business, ABIFER’s prediction for sales in 2010 is 60 to 70 machines, compared to the 20 units sold in 2009.
