Sugar and alcohol behemoth Cosan closed the second quarter of the business year of 2011, ending in September, with a net income of R$ 4.7 billion (€ 1.98 billion), which is a growth of 32% compared with the same period of last year. This figure is part of the preliminary balance sheet disclosed by the company.
In the sugar segment, the net income came to R$ 1.1 billion (€ 462.4 million), which is an increase of 42.7% with the same comparison base. The total volume of product as commercialized also rose from 1.1 million to 1.372 million tones. The average price per tone also increased, closing the quarter at a level of R$ 806.6 (€ 339.1 million) compared with R$ 704.4 (€ 296.1) last year.
The income generated by ethanol was 62.4% higher than that of the same comparison base, totaling R$ 532.4 million (€ 223.8 million) between July and September. The volume sold increased from 450.7 million liters to 639.3 million liters, while the price of the product rose from R$ 727.3 (€ 305.7) per thousand liters to R$ 832.3 (€ 349.9) per thousand liters.
The total revenue generated by the fuel distribution division came to R$ 2.8 billion (€ 1.18 billion) between July and September, which works out at an increase of 25.8% compared with the same interval in 2009. The sales of lubricants represented R$ 204.6 million (€ 86.01 million) of the total, with a growth of 19.7% for the same comparative base.
The income generated by Rumo, which is the transport and logistics division of this industrial giant, grew 236.5% over the quarter, reaching a figure of R$ 144.6 million (€ 60.78 million).
Cosan shall be publicizing their consolidated balance sheet on the 10th, after the market has closed.
