The BNB has released two installments, totaling R$ 689 million in funding for the construction of the Trans-northeastern railway. With the new investments, the sum disbursed with resources from the Fund for Development of the Northeast (FDNE) totals R$ 1.25 billion.
Considered one of the major infrastructure projects underway in the country and with the total budget exceeding R$ 5 billion, the Trans-northeastern is one of the projects of the Program to Accelerate Growth of the Federal Government (PAC).
The railway will have 1,728 kilometers extension and will link the Eliseu Martins railway terminal, in the south of Piauí, to the ports of Pecém, in Ceará, with junction at Missão Velha, and Suape, in Pernambuco. The goal is to raise the competitiveness of agricultural and mineral production in the region with a modern logistics that puts together a high performance railroad and deep draft ports that can accommodate large ships.
Presidential visit
Next week, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will visit the works of the railway in order to inaugurate the first section of 110 km, linking Missão Velha and Salgueiro, Pernambuco, whose construction took five years to be completed. On occasion, the expectation is that he signs the work orders for the last sections of the project.
