President Dilma Rousseff stated in the morning of this Monday (17) that the government should invest US$ 17 billion in works for the expansion of metro, bus corridor and light rail vehicle (LRV) works. The announcement was made in the ‘Breakfast with the President’ program.
The major focus of the investment will be on metro projects, considered by the President as a fast and modern transportation mean, which carries a lot of people with quality and comfort. The cities of Curitiba and Porto Alegre will receive US$ 1 billion each for the construction of metros.
When the works are completed in Porto Alegre, the local metro should carry up to 300,000 passengers / day, stated Dilma Rousseff. By its turn, in Curitiba, the funding must cover 80% of the total budget required for the construction of the first metro track in the city.
Belo Horizonte will also receive US$ 1 billion to expand the system with the new tracks 2 and 3, and modernization of track 1. The President also announced the intention of using funds from the Growth Acceleration Program (PAC) to speed the metro works in Recife and Fortaleza.
The city of Belo Horizonte will receive 11 bus integration terminals in seven cities of its metropolitan region. Porto Alegre will have eight bus corridors to connect the state capital to other surrounding cities.
Dilma also defended the end of the idea that collective transportation is exclusively for poor people, but said that the individuals have the right of buying their own car. The President believes that the solution for transportation in big cities includes investments of quality public transport.
