The Transports Minister, César Borges, said last Wednesday that the railroad section linking Lucas do Rio Verde (Mato Grosso) to Campinorte (Goiás) will be auctioned in the first quarter of 2014. He expects the Union’s Court of Accounts (TCU) to approve this year still the RFP for this railroad, which is part of the concessions program to private initiative announced by President Dilma Rousseff last year. Inside the package, the industry sector has not advanced anything this year – no section was auctioned because there are doubts about the new concession model proposed by the government.
The public hearing for the section of 1,000 km (621 miles) occurred in August. Investments are projected of 6.3 to 7 billion Brazilian Reais [BRL]. The railroad will cut through seventeen municipalities in Mato Grosso and Goiás. The rails will connect to the North-South railroad.
On press interview about the auction of the path between Brasília and Great Belo Horizonte, Borges said that after Lucas do Rio Verde-Campinorte, the next railroad to be auctioned is the one linking Açailândia (Maranhão) to Barcarena (Belém’s metropolitan region).
