Abifer consolidates 2013 production

ABIFER (Associação Brasileira da Indústria Ferroviária – Brazilian Association of Railway Industry) consolidated production and delivery volumes of railway vehicles in Brazilian railway industry in 2013.

The volume of freight cars manufactured in 2013 totaled 2,280 units, down from the 2,918 cars delivered in 2012.

Locomotives, in turn, totaled 83 units, compared to 70 in 2012.

“The rail freight industry expects higher volume of orders arising from new projects in iron ore, grains, and containers industry,” says the CEO of the organization, Vicente Abate.

Coaches totaled 219 units, against 207 in 2012, a small but sustainable reaction, which should accentuate from 2014 onward. The total revenue of the railway industry was USD 1,8 billion, 5% higher than in 2012.

The sector has good prospects for 2014. Projections point to the production of 3000 to 3500 cars, 320 coaches, and only 60 locomotives, an insufficient volume to compensate for the high investments made by the two global locomotive manufacturers in Brazil. Revenue for 2014 is expected to reach USD 2 billion.

ABIFER advocates the renovation of old cars and locomotives of RFFSA’s fleet (Rede Ferroviária Federal – Federal Rail Network), to achieve a predictability of orders and a continuity of production volumes of these vehicles over the next few years. “We already pleaded with the Government, who owns RFFSA’s fleet, to enable concessionaires to acquire the renewed fleet using the amount paid by them as leasing. It is essential to have the Government support from 2014,” concluded Abate.
