Libra inaugurates shipping containers on railways

Libra Logística is starting its shipping containers operation through railways in a partnership with MRS. The logistic service will be delivered by Libra Logística Valongo (Teval), a multimodal unity from Libra Logística prepared to attend all types of cargo.

In June, MRS started an unprecedented service of container transportation through railways between the two shores of the Santos port (Santos and Guarujá). Before that, the procedures were made through trucks. Generally, containers disembark from the vessel at a particular terminal, but its cargo is cleared in another. The opposite also happens, when the container is packed in one place and taken to the other in order to be boarded on the ship. It is exactly on this point where the Teval will serve as connection between parties, performing the cargo transfer between port terminals, known as door to door path.

We are at the start of the operation, but we already performed three trips with approximately the transport of 132 TEUs (20 feet containers) and potential to increase this volume, Daniel Brugioni, General Director of Libra Logística, states. According to him, the railway service is extremely efficient, since it makes the process faster and reduces costs.

We are a logistics operator and our commitment is to deliver the load on schedule. The service transfer to railways becomes important because, currently, the transit between the two shores of the Santos port (Santos and Guarujá) has shown difficulties regarding the flow and delays. In addition, the train option is 12% cheaper than trucks and it is environment friendly, Brugioni concludes.

Teval, having 145 thousand m², being 115 thousand m² of yard and 6 thousand m² of deck area, is strategically localized at the entrance of the Santos Port and features 800 meters of railway sectors. Currently, from the 3 thousand containers Teval operates each month, 700 of those are destined to Guarujá. The capacity for Teval’s railway transportation between Santos and Guarujá is more than twice this volume.
