Productive sector wants to include rail in logistics plan

The construction of the railway between the municipalities of Maracaju (MS) and Paranaguá (PR), whose route project includes the Campos Gerais region, aroused the interest of Minister of Transport, Antonio Carlos Rodrigues. Although the work is not included in the new stage of the logistics Investment Program (LIP 2), released earlier this month by the Federal Government, he requested a technical meeting with representatives of the production sector of Paraná, to discuss the feasibility of expansion projects and improvement in infrastructure. The ‘PIL 2’ included only two works in the state: improvements in road stretch between Lapa and União da Vitória and in Paranaguá port.

We want a meeting with the government of Parana, ANTT and representatives of the productive sector to try to meet the technical requirements demanded by TCU and thus make possible the expansion of railways in this state”, said Rodrigues, at the meeting of the Federação das Indústrias do Paraná (Fiep) on Campus da Indústria de Curitiba, last Friday, to present the ‘PIL’. The work of this railway is one of the eight infrastructure works included in a letter delivered to Minister by Edson Campagnolo, president of Fiep, and treated as priority.

Campagnolo gave also a previous version of the Plano Estadual de Logística e Transportes (Pelt 2035). We expect the minister in support of our petition to open a public notice for what construction companies can show interest  through Propostas de Manifestação de Interesse (PMI).  We have studies showing that investments in this stretch, in which are concentrated the great state cooperatives, pay for themselves in a few years”, said the organization’s president. It is estimated that in eight years, the work ‘repay for itself’. João Arthur Mohr, member of the Fiep’s Conselho Temático de Infraestrutura, states that the ramps are too inclined to Paranaguá, which allows only 50 wagons with low speed on the railroad. Thus, only 20% of what arrives at the port is transported by trains.

Path benefits regional logistics

The construction of the railway would bring direct benefits to logistics in the region. Using the extension in the transport of grain to the Paranaguá port, hundreds of trucks would be removed from roads – including the urban stretch in Ponta Grossa – relieving the traffic on the highways. In the Campos Gerais region, the railway will pass through towns like Irati, Fernandes Pinheiro, Palmeira and Porto Amazonas, absorbing the production of several cooperatives.
