Campos do Jordão Railway Concession Suspended by São Paulo Government

The São Paulo State Government has decided to suspend the concession auction for the Campos do Jordão Railway, which had been scheduled to take place at the end of June.

According to the Secretariat for Investment Partnerships (SPI), the postponement is temporary and is due to contributions and requests submitted by potential interested parties in the project.

Until a new date is announced, the government will carry out assessments and adjustments to the contractual model, aiming to improve the concession structure and adapt it to market demands for transferring the operation of the tourist service to the private sector.

The project currently under review provides for the concession of the administration of 47 kilometers of railway track for a period of 24 years, in addition to estimated investments of R$317 million.

Under the established rules, the future concessionaire will be responsible for improving infrastructure, operating tourist trains between Campos do Jordão and Pindamonhangaba, and revitalizing stations, operating systems, and rolling stock.

The concession is classified as a brownfield asset, a model in which the operator takes over an existing structure. The package also includes the Reino das Águas Claras Park, covering an area of 38,000 square meters, and the Railway Memory Museum, both located in a region well established as a tourist destination, especially during the winter season.

As for revenue sources, the winning bidder will be able to rely not only on ticket sales from railway services and tourist trams, but also on ancillary revenue, such as parking fees, short- and long-term advertising agreements, the offering of new tourist attractions, naming rights, and other commercial opportunities provided for in the contract.
