As work progresses on Brazil’s first medium-speed train, which will connect São Paulo to Campinas, TIC Trens has taken another step in preparing its operations. The concessionaire has signed a contract with LANDER Simulation & Training Solutions for the supply of its first ferrovia driving simulator.
With delivery scheduled for the first half of 2027, the equipment will be installed at Francisco Morato station on Linha 7-Rubi, where it will be used for training and upgrading the locomotive operators who will work on the services operated by the concessionaire.
The simulator will be configured to reproduce the operational interface of the three systems under TIC Trens’ responsibility: Linha 7-Rubi, Trem Intercidades (TIC) Campinas, and Trem InterMetropolitano (TIM), which will also serve the municipalities of Valinhos, Vinhedo, and Louveira.
In practice, the platform will allow operators to train on both the operation of current Series 9500 trains and future trainsets that will enter service in the coming years. The system was developed to simulate different rolling stock models, regardless of manufacturer, offering an experience close to operational reality.
Beyond routine procedures, training will include more complex scenarios such as adverse weather conditions, track interference, operational failures, and situations requiring quick decisions from locomotive operators. This entire process will occur in a controlled environment, expanding team preparation before field operation.
“We continuously invest in the training and development of our operations and maintenance teams, with a focus on reliability and operational safety. In compliance with the concession contract guidelines, the simulator will enable us to enhance practical ferrovia operator training in a controlled environment before field operation, while also expanding team preparation for different operational scenarios following high ferrovia safety standards,” states Federico D. Andrés, Director of Implementation at TIC Trens.
Two-phase implementation
The simulator implementation will follow the Linha 7-Rubi modernization schedule and will be carried out in two phases.
In the first phase, one cabin equipped with a command console for Series 9500 trains, manufactured by Hyundai Rotem, will be delivered, reproducing the current ATC signaling system.
In the second phase, the simulator will receive two new interchangeable command consoles, corresponding to future fleets of the TIM and TIC Campinas. At this stage, the software will also reproduce the European ETCS Level 2 ferrovia control system, technology that will be adopted in the services operated by the concessionaire.
Completion of this second phase will occur in parallel with the ferrovia operator training schedule for the start of InterMetropolitan Train operations, scheduled for 2029, and Intercidades Campinas Train, whose entry into service is scheduled for 2031.
