São Paulo Metro installs gap reducers on the platforms

During her first ever trip on the São Paulo Metro system, little Sara, aged 9, says she loved the trip, but also showed one concern – the gap between the train and the station platform.

When I get on or get off [the train], I need to jump to get to the other side. I am afraid of falling, said the girl, holding the hands of her father, retiree José Medina, aged 67.

To try to avoid accidents and also improve the safety of the passengers, especially children and senior citizens, the São Paulo Metro Company has this week started to install gap reducers on the platforms, initially at Sé Station, on Line 1 (Blue Line), and Corinthians-Itaquera on Line 3 (Red Line). Made of yellow polyurethane, these reducers are about five centimeters wide. The reducers are fixed and are being installed in the parts of the platform where the doors open.

The gap between the trains and the boarding areas is greater at the stations which are constructed on curved sections of track, such as São Bento Station on Line 1 (Blue Line).
As at yesterday, the new equipment had only been installed on the Jabaquara-bound platform of Sé Station.

The São Paulo Metro Company says they are looking into the possibility of installing these devices in other stations. The institution did not inform how much was spent on this equipment.
