The Government is now authorized to request credit for the execution of construction and improvement work in the rail transport segment. This means that the extension to Track 2 (Green Track) of the São Paulo Underground, as far as the Cidade Tiradentes Hospital, using a monorail system, and also the construction of a Light Underground system for Track 18, to connect Tamanduateí station to the neighborhood of Alvarenga, in the city of São Bernardo do Campo, in the ABC region, will finally get off the ground. The credit operations as authorized by the Congresspeople for these two projects total US$ 892.86 million, which corresponds to 16% of the total of all budgets which is US$ 5.55 billion.
This is all because the Legislative Assembly of the State of São Paulo, last Wednesday, passed the Bill of Law No. 624/2011 of the Executive Power, which authorizes the request for credit for the expansion of railroad transport.
In the opinion of Adalberto Maluf Filho, a researcher of the Institute of International Relations of the University of São Paulo (USP), the monorail system is still not suitable for heavy transport as it is very expensive and has limited capacity. As an alternative, the researcher suggests that priority be given to investment in high-speed bus corridors, cycle paths and also pavements for pedestrians.
