Transport minister, César Borges said on Wednesday that he sees no problem for the Spanish company Renfe participate in the auction for the construction of the first HST (High Speed Train) in Brazil, which will connect Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
Borges said that the government sees no impediments for that the spanish consortium present the bid, since the rail accident last week in Santiago de Compostela would not have occurred in a high speed line.
“The government does not want to prevent anyone from participating. We want the largest number of participation,” said the minister to Agência Brasil, who clarified, however, that the final decision depends on the ANTT (National Terrestrial Transportation Agency, in free translation).

According to conditions, cannot participate in the bidding any operator who has suffered fatalities in a five-year period in a high-speed line, where the speed limit is more than 250 km/h.
The president of Renfe, Julio Gómez-Pomar, said today in Madrid that the railway started an information campaign in several countries, especially in Brazil, to make clear that the train was not high speed.
In turn, the president of the government’s EPL (Planning and Logistics Enterprise, in free translation), Bernardo Figueiredo, said in remarks to journalists, that if the explanations of Renfe are correct, the accident don’t make the spanish participation unfeasible in the bidding for the HST.
The design of the first high-speed line in Latin America, will have a length of 511 km and is estimated to require investments of about US$ 17 billion.
