New cable-car is already working in Rio

One of the most famous tourist points in Rio, the Sugar Loaf has inaugurated its new cable-car cabins. The new cable-car takes the tourists from Praia Vermelha station, at the city’s south area, to the top of the Cara de Cão and Sugar Loaf hills. 


The governor of Rio, Sérgio Cabral, took part in the inauguration. According to the cable-car managing company, other three new cabins shall be set up in 2008.


“This is already one of the first stages for future events organization, as the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games, in case we are chosen. In about two years, we shall set up a similar cable-car at Complexo do Alemão”, the governor said in official note.


The cabins remodeling happened after after 36 years of operation. The Caminho Aéreo Pão de Açúcar Company director, Maria Ercília Leite de Castro, informed that the cabins came from Switzerland and costed about € 3 million. The equipments have rounder shape, dark tinted anti-reflex glasses, new ventilation system and they are going to play Brazilian popular music soundtracks.


The ticket costs about US$ 13 (R$ 22) for people over 12 years old, US$ 6 (R$ 11) for children between six to 12 years old and, for children under six, the ticket is free. Senior ticket, for people over 60 years old, costs about 50% of the price.


The Sugar Loaf Cable-Car started operating in 1912 and has already transported more than 26 million tourists. The place is considered one of Rio de Janeiro’s postcards and one of the world’s most visited places.
