Service contract in Thailand extended

The Bangkok Mass Transit System Company Limited (BTSC) and the Siemens Group Transportation Systems (TS) have extended their contract for the maintenance of the mass transit system BTS for a term of ten more years. The contract is worth around 54 million euros.

Under the terms of a full-service contract, Siemens is responsible for maintaining the entire BTS rapid transit system including 35 three-car metro trains, the signaling and interlocking equipment, the operations control center, the medium-voltage supply and the power supply to the third rail. In addition, Siemens is in charge of maintenance of the track network, depot facilities, workshop equipment, building systems and communications.

Arne Kleversaat, President of the Integrated Services Division at Siemens TS, attributes the successful extension of this contract essentially to the reliability of the BTS system, saying: “All the defined availability values have been exceeded ever since inauguration of the system five years ago.”

The BTS system is an elevated, rail-based mass transit system that runs 18 meters above ground though Bangkok’s business district. Comprising the Sukhumvit Line and Silom Line, this transit network serves a total of 24 stations over a distance of roughly 23 kilometers. Siemens handover the turnkey system at the end of 1999 and has been responsible for its maintenance ever since.

The Transportation Systems Group (TS) of Siemens AG is one of the leading international suppliers to the railways industry. As single source supplier and system integrator, the Group combines in its business segments Automation & Power, Rolling Stock, Turnkey Systems and Integrated Services all the expertise necessary to cover the spectrum from signaling and control systems to traction power supplies, as well as rolling stock for mass transit, regional and main line services. Extensive experience in project management and forward-looking service concepts complement our portfolio. In fiscal 2004 (ended September 30) TS generated sales of EUR4.3 billion with a staff of around 17,900 the world over.
