A new distribution center in São Paulo with enlarged area and railroad terminal
Katoen Natie intends to increase its Brazilian logistic marketshare with the enlargement to 72 hectares of the Multimodal Distribution Center (MDC) and the expansion of the railroad terminal. This should optimize transportation not only in the limits of its area in Paulínia, but in whole state of São Paulo. The investment should reach US 7 million for the phase one.
The announcement was made on November 22, by the CEO of Katoen Natie in Brazil, Benoit Somers, in a ceremony with the participation of crown prince of Belgium, Philippe. Somers explained that the works, which will be initiated in the beginning of 2006, should last from four to six months. “The terminal is going to facilitate the container movement, storage and discharge”, he stated.
According to the company, today 20% of the products that arrive to the Paulínia are provenient from railroad terminals. “For Katoen Natie clients, that kind of transportation means an economy between 10% and 20% in the logistics cost. With the terminal, we are betting on growth of the railroad and of intermodal transportation in Brazil”, said Somers. The project in the first phase contemplates the construction of about 3 km of track, a container storage yard and container cranes.
The ceremony also signalled the commemorations of the 150 years of performance of Katoen Natie all over the world. Prince Philippe came accompanied by members of the government and chief executives of Katoen Natie, as the vice-presidents Karine Huts and Dirk Lannoo, Dirk Michielsens, CFO, Peter Valkeniers, Manager for Petrochemicals, Joris Thys Manager for Port Operations.
