Train SP/Guarulhos should be ready in 2010

The successful experiences with fast airport trains -with speed above100 km/h- in other countries, became a reference to the project called ´Expresso Aeroporto´, that will leave the Luz Station, in the center of  São Paulo´s capital, to the airport of Cumbica.

The trains will travel 31 km to Cumbica and won´t take longer than 20 minutes. “The train is fundamental to take passengers to the airport. Then, if you will implant a third or a fourth terminal at the airport, it is of fundamental importance that you also implement an appropriate accessibility”, engineer Nicolau Gualda from Poli-USP says. “Without a train to the airport, you won´t have the expected success in Cumbica airport”.

Other means will be offered to attract passengers: everybody will have seats, and also guaranteed space for the luggage, similar to airplanes. The tickets price should be between R$ 12 (US$ 6) and R$ 28 (US$ 14).

The railroad construction is estimated in US$ 1,7 billion. São Paulo´s government introduced this idea to stimulate flights in Cumbica, but doesn´t want to pay for that all by itself. Now, it needs to convince the Federal Government and the private initiative to support the project.

“That project  can only be done as a PPP, where the private sector will enter with a part and operate the Expresso Aeroporto”, affirmed the secretary of the Metropolitan Transports of the State, José Luiz Portella. “BNDES is very inclined to finance it, what makes partners entry easier.”

The construction of the rail connection between the cities of São Paulo and Guarulhos, where stays the airport of Cumbica, will start in the beginning of 2008. The forecast is that up to 2010 the Expresso Aeroporto will be in operation.
