Involved in the project with more than 500 airports around the globe, the Dutch Company Naco (Netherlands Airport Consultants acronym) was chosen by the consortium Aeroportos Brasil to perform the Viracopos project, in Campinas (SP). The project’s general concept was not defined yet by the airport concession winners (Triunfo, UTC and the French operator Egis).
However, according to the business development director of Naco, Ben Hasselman, some characteristics are already defined, like constructing a rail terminal for passengers inside the airport.
According to him, the terminal can be the one of the High-Speed Train – a Federal Government’s project to connect Campinas, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. But can be also a more traditional train, he said, like the one projected by the State Government of São Paulo. Hasselman says that the project can be a huge success because in Amsterdam (in airports like Viracopos, according to him), 40% of plane passengers use the bullet train station inside the airport. We do not know who is going to afford the [terminal’s] costs. It may be the consortium alone, or with a partnership with the train manager.
It is also foreseen by the project at least one convention center and three hotels, being one beside the airport and the other two a little farther. It is too soon to talk about the size of each one and the management model, if it will be self-managed or if it will be managed by other companies, he affirms. He also said that Viracopos project is almost a green field (a project built from scratch) because of its expansion potential from 7.5 million passengers a year to 80 million – and it is not the most sophisticated from the Company’s portfolio.

It is going to be a small airport, like the one developed in Amsterdam to Schiphol [manager of the Dutch airport], he says, which points out Beijing’s and Abu Dhabi’s terminals as the most complex terminals developed. In this case, the projects were contracted by the Government, which is also a big thing. Companies are usually more modest.
