Major Japanese businessmen are interested in competing logistics concessions that the government should launch in the coming years, especially in the areas of ports and railroads. The interest was discussed between President Dilma Rousseff and Brazilian and Japanese businessmen during the meeting of the Group of Eminent of the Japan-Brazil Cooperation Committee.
The CEO of Vale, Murilo Ferreira, part of the committee, said that the Japanese assess logistical bottlenecks in Brazil as investment opportunities in the sector. “The proportion of the Brazilian GDP [Gross Domestic Product] that is dedicated to logistics in relation to Japan is great, which means a problem, but also an opportunity for the Japanese to participate in this process of railroads and ports,” he said.
According to the leader of the Group of Eminent and vice president of the National Confederation of Industry (CNI), Carlos Mariani Bittencourt, the Japanese experience in the implantation of railroads can be used in network expansion in Brazil.
“The Japanese representatives have suggested that they are willing to participate in the development of the new transport network. They cited the Japanese experience in terms of development of railroad networks, such as in the case of Russia, in which Japan is developing a new network system. And the president stimulated the Japanese businessmen to come and apply the same principles, the same competence that they are using in Russia and India here in Brazil, connected to the improvement of the ports,” he said.
Brazilian and Japanese also discussed investment opportunities in oil and gas exploration, including the Libra oil field, and professional training, through the Science without Borders Program. The Libra oil field, in the pre-salt layer, 160 kilometers away from the coast of Rio de Janeiro, was discovered by Petrobras in 2006 and has estimated production between 8 and 12.
