The expansion project for the Federal District’s metro system through the future Line 2 received updates on Monday, June 8, regarding its route and estimated investment value, currently calculated at R$20.4 billion.
According to the Federal District Government Secretariat, the new line will connect the Plano Piloto area to the southern region of the Federal District, serving the cities of Santa Maria, Gama, Riacho Fundo II, Recanto das Emas, Núcleo Bandeirante, Candangolândia, and Cruzeiro.
The project also includes integration with strategic locations such as the Plano Piloto Bus Terminal and the Esplanade of Ministries, the latter of which is currently not served by rail transit. The project is presently in the Preliminary Technical, Economic, and Environmental Feasibility Study (EVTea) phase.
“The next step is the economic and financial modeling, along with the preliminary engineering design, so that we can launch the bidding process for this project. Governor Celina Leão’s directive is for this to be done as quickly as possible, because we have passenger demand comparable to what we currently serve in the Ceilândia and Samambaia regions,” explained Handerson Cabral, President of Metro-DF.
Line 2 is expected to be approximately 60 kilometers long, following guidelines aligned with the government’s strategic plan and the development planning prepared by the metro company. The project is also included in the Federal District Rail Public Transportation Development Plan (PDTT-DF). Its estimated capacity is 50,000 passengers during peak hours and 130,000 passengers per day.
The investment amount may still change and could be reduced by as much as R$7 billion, depending on the final route selected and the technical interventions defined through the ongoing studies.
Line 1 Expansion Underway
At the same time, the Federal District Metro continues to carry out the expansion of Line 1. Over the next five years, new sections of the Ceilândia and Samambaia branches are expected to enter service, with the addition of approximately 25,000 passengers to the system.
On the Samambaia branch, investments totaling R$319 million are being made. Of this amount, R$77.6 million has already been committed. Current works include earthmoving, drainage, structural construction, retaining systems, complementary systems, and special engineering interventions, generating approximately 350 direct and indirect jobs.
“These are extremely important initiatives for urban mobility in the Federal District,” Cabral added.
Upon completion of the expansions, the Federal District Metro network will reach 48.2 kilometers in length, compared with the current 42.3 kilometers, increasing daily ridership to approximately 185,000 passengers.
