MRS started a new railroad container transportation between the two shores of Santos (SP) harbor, Santos and Guarujá. Until now, the transference of containers between the terminals located on both sides was 100% via truck. The path of less than 25 miles was not considered economically Trackble for the railroad.
“It was a paradigm shift. We started testing and we noticed that it could be done”, says Guilherme Alvisi, business general manager from MRS. According to him, the market is promising, because lots of containers are discharged from the ship in a terminal, but the freight is disengaged in another ship, in case of importing. The opposite applies, when the container is stowed in one place and taken to another to be freighted in the ship.
The service started to work in June and since then, 132 Teus (20 feet containers) have been moved between the Teval, the Libra terminal on Santos’ rear region that works as a transference lung, and the Embraport and Santos Brasil harbor terminals, in Guarujá. The path is done door to door, since the installations have railroad branches that connect to the MRS network – a competitive differential.
MRS is glimpses a business potential, since it has an installed capacity to make 3 thousand annual Teus in the route. The objective now is to scale the operation to the current client and also to expand the business jointly with the other terminals that also have railroad branches.
Empraport, from Odebrecht Transport and Dubai Ports World, initiated the receipt of Teval containers via railroad in test mode, but sees the possibility of it becoming systematic, with the recent inauguration of the railroad yard.
“Our great objective with the railroad yard is to search synergy with the ships exterior commerce operations [ export and import freights]”, says Fabio Siccherino, Embraport new businesses’ director.
One of the main advantages of the train over the truck transportation is the cost of service, which is less expensive, given the scale economy. The operation is done with “doublestack” cars, which pile up to four Teus.
Teval also sees great potential in the modality. “We are a logistic operator, our commitment is to deliver the shipment within the deadline. The transference to the tracks starts to be important because today the traffic between Santos and Guarujá creates difficulties”, says Daniel Bruioni, general director of the Libra Logística. According to him, the option for the train is 12% cheaper, besides being more sustainable.
Currently, from the 3 thousand containers that Teval operates monthly, 700 are destined to Guarujá. Teval’s capacity for railroad transportation between Santos and Guarujá is more than the double of that volume.
