MRS has filed to the National Land Transportation Agency (ANTT) today the request to extend the term for the railway concession that it administrates in Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. The railway network has 1,643km. The concession agreement, celebrated in 1996, expires in 2026. With today’s initiative, MRS requests, in advance, a prolongation for another 30 years. In other words, until 2056. One of the justifications is that the company, in order to make new investments, needs to know how long it will administer the railway. There is no deadline for the government to reply MRS’s request. The main raw material transported through the railway administered by MRS is iron ore.
Other companies are studying to follow MRS’ model and request an advanced renewal.
