Made in 1975, the Rio de Janeiro’s trains will have in 2011 a luxury company: 19 high-tech compositions will start arriving from China for the city. Japanese components, Australian air-conditioned and a design which will be chosen by the passengers are among the concessionaire bets to make an end on the astral hell of a kind of transport that was considered, once in a lifetime, a reference in the city.
“The new trains are as just as a BMW. As soon as they start to arrive, we can refurbish our older trains, which will be like a retrofit (architecture technique that maintains the facade, modernizing only the interior part of the property), affirms the president of Metro Rio, Jose Gustavo de Souza Costa.
The new compositions will start to arrive on July of 2011, and the concessionaire expects that the trains will be operating in 2012. A huge track was built in China for the 5 thousand km tests predicted before the delivery. A French office was hired to elaborate the internal design of the trains. There will be a pre-selection of the concessionaire so that the passengers can define which one will be actually applied.
Taiwan effect
Another modification that the government will adopt is a method to give more guarantees for investors about the possible demand inferior to the original one. The investors fear is to happen in Brazil the same thing that happened on Taiwan’s high-speed train, when there were less passengers than expected, generating cash difficulties for the enterprise.
To minimize this risk, the Brazilian government decided that will develop a financial method which allows that the loan taxes and payment deadline will be altered if there is less demand than the originally projected. The very announcement will give a leeway: the license period is 40 years, while the loan must be paid in 30 years.
