Petrobras plans to supply a significant part of the consumption of fuel products in the Midwest Region with products to be produced in the future refinery in Maranhão. This information was supplied this Thursday morning by the Supplies Manager of this State Company, Paulo Roberto Costa, explaining that the idea is to transport the fuel using the North-South Railway. He also explained that currently the region is supplied through the transport of this fuel by road.
According to the executive, Petrobras plans to use the railway and, for this purpose, the company is already having talks with Vale, the company which owns part of the lines.
At present the trains leave from Goiás to Maranhão transporting grain products such as soybeans, and also iron ore for export, returning empty. Our idea is to make use of these carriages to carry the fuel from the refinery down to the Brazilian Midwest – said Mr Costa.
The refinery at Maranhão is starting land levelling work and the forecast is that production will get under way at the end of 2014. In this first phase, the capacity of the refinery will be set at 300 thousand barrels per day of petroleum products, and then an additional 300 thousand in a second phase, as from 2017.

The director of Petrobras reckons that this year the consumption of petroleum products should have a rise of some 10%, a percentage which had already been registered in October. In his opinion, if the consumption of fuel keeps up this strong pace in the coming years, then it is probable that Petrobras may have to use, on the domestic market, the petroleum products produced not only at the refinery in Maranhão but also at the refinery in Ceará, which will also be constructed. Initially, the two refineries had been intended for production for the export market.
