After scrapping the creation of five bus corridors in Sao Paulo, change the project for Celso Garcia Ave. and transfer Expresso Tiradentes to the city’s subway, Sao Paulo’s Municipality begins today the bidding process to install 34 km of monorail. The system, adopted in Asian cities and new to the country, will have two parts, connecting the Jardim Angela terminal to Vila Olimpia on one side, and Vila Sonia on the other.
By the end of his mandate, mayor Gilberto Kassab intends to inaugurate the first stations. The rest should be delivery until the 2014 World Cup. “This is a reasonable expectation”, he said, after telling the press he did not enjoy setting deadlines. The project will cost US$ 29 million and should be completed until 2010.
At first, 11 km of railway line should be constructed, between Jardim Angela and Largo Treze, in Santo Amaro. This phase will cost around US$ 800 million and will be benched by the City Hall. The second phase, which will include the remaining 23 km, will be in charge of the private sector, which in fact may operate the entire system. “It is something similar of what happened in Rodoanel”, said Kassab.
The monorail is a light rail running over a single rail, with tires. In Sao Paulo, each train will have a maximum of six cars, transporting 30 thousand of passengers per hour. According to City Hall’s announcement, the headway between trains will be 90 seconds, with the same fare charged by Sao Paulo’s Subway, which is currently 10% more expensive than buses.

Each monorail line costs US$ 75 million on average – two time’s investment necessary for the creation of bus corridors and half of what is actually needed for the Subway. “We’ve agreed this system has the least environmental and urban impacts, it is quickly to be constructed and also has a redevelopment area possibility, said Secretary of Transportation, Alexandre de Moraes.
According to him, it is foreseen the construction of squares and lanes in the vicinity of the railroad lines.
