The first tube out of 11 for the Marmaray Project, which contains a tube tunnel under the Bosporus to connect the Asian and European sides of Istanbul with a railway system, was sank Saturday under the Bosporus yesterday.
Istanbul Port and Marmaray Sea Work head Ender Kurt pointed out the process to install the tube, called E-11, reported the Anatolia news agency on Sunday.
Kurt said that 13 divers worked to stabilize the E-11 under the sea, adding: “It will take six days to stabilize the tube and to fix the ties to Big Island, (One of the four islands in the Marmara Sea.) but the biggest work was today. The most sensitive work is completed.”
The Marmaray Project has been Turkey´s dream for a century and which will almost solve Istanbul´s traffic problem, said Transportation Minister Binali Yıldırım. Yıldırım also specified that the tunnel work for other routes continue.

According to Yıldırım there are some reasons that make this project very important. The first reason is, he expressed, is that the tunnel connects the historical Silk Road, which lies between west and east, from Europe to the Far East.
The project is being conducted by the Railways and Ports Directorate, the Japanese Taisei Corporation, Gama-Nurol and Avrasya Counseling. The project is now behind schedule after construction unearthed historical and cultural assets, Yıldırım explained.
The project will connect Asia to Europe with tunnels 60 meters under the sea, with a two-way railway system aiming to solve traffic problems in Istanbul.
