By April, eight brand new trains are scheduled to begin operating in Rio. The vehicles are part of the last shipment of 20 that the state government ordered from Rotem of Korea, which one the tender through a consortium headed up by Japan’s Mitsui. Twelve trains now are operating. The others are at a workshop in Rio awaiting liberation. They will hit the tracks as soon as payment of outstanding invoices has resumed.
Rio de Janeiro manufacturers could supplement production.
The Koreans are unbeatable in the production of trains but Rio has a chance to give its railroad industry a boost if the next tender for increasing the local fleet overseas calls only for importing the car “boxes”. The Três Rios manufacturing company is capable of filling them up with seats, support equipment and painting them. In its contacts with SuperVia, Rio as reported that it will need 120 new trains over the next years. It’s a deal involving half of billion dollars.
