Alstom can transfer HST technology

Alstom has plans of bringing to Brazil a part of the production and technology high-speed trains (HST) of her French head office, in case it participates in the construction of the Brazilian HST, strong line of 511 km that will link São Paulo to Rio de Janeiro. The expectation of the company, according the president in Brazil, Philippe Delleur, is that the auction announcement for the construction of the new enterprise, appraised in R$ 34 billion, be thrown by the government still this year.


Only company in Brazil to operate a rail industry, with a factory in São Paulo, Alstom is market leader in the area of HST, having participated in the construction of several projects in the world, being the most recent in Morocco and Saudi Arabia. “The experience of more than 30 years of the company in Europe and the fact of we already have an industrial base installed in Brazil, with hand of qualified work, it will activate the process of technology transfer for the production of the high-speed train in Brazil”, he affirmed.


According to the executive, Alstom it is prepared to assist to the new demand that appears in that area, with the perspective of release of projects as the one of the high-speed train and of subway and light vehicles on rails (LRV) in capitals that are moved to receive the the WorldCup of 2014 and the Olympic Games of 2016.


For the project of the high-speed train, Alstom president said that the company will offer two types of products: TGV Dúplex, train of two floors, with capacity for up to thousand passing and more appropriate to the regional traffic, with speed that can arrive to 320 km for hour, and AGV (rail motor of great speed), for 700 passengers and speed of 360 km per hour.

For being very wide, that project type, in the executive’s opinion, will involve risks that should be shared between the Brazilian government and the deprived initiative. “Especially the demand risks, that they are very strong in the beginning of implantation of the project, besides the environmental risks. They are important subjects that they should be illustrious before the project to be put at the market”, it commented on.


Brazil is today the fifth largest market of Alstom in the world. The company is here there is more than 50 years – the country was one of their first investments in the exterior – and it uses a total of 4 thousand employees, distributed in three units: the one of transports, in Lapa, in São Paulo; the one of energy, in Taubaté (SP); and the thirst, also in the capital from São Paulo.


The unit of Lapa is considered the world center of excellence in the production of cars in stainless steel. The unit uses more than a thousand people, in an area of 125 thousand square meters. In the section it transports, Alstom is the only signalling manufacturer and rolling material for passengers’ transport – doing from the project and production of cars, signalling (of roads and of board) systems and centers of operational control to the maintenance and modernization of cars and locomotives and the projet administration.


Alstom, in agreement with Delleur, is also the only company that invested her up-to-the-minute technology in South America for the production of solutions that they can go from LRV (light vehicle on rail) to HST (high-speed train), going by regional trains and subways. One in each two subways in operation in South America was developed by Alstom Brasil.


Besides, the Brazilian branch of the company became an important export pole, producing equipments and systems for great projects in the area of energy, like the plants of Três Gargantas (China), La Vueltosa (Venezuela) and Ralco (Chile), among other, and in the transport area, for the subways of Buenos Aires (Argentina), Santiago (Chile) and New York (United States).


In the period of April of 2008 to March of 2009, the revenue of Alstom was of R$ 1,81 billion, with R$ 4,17 billion in received requests. Among the contracts of the company in process in Brazil, Delleur detaches the modernization of the system of signalling of the subway of São Paulo. “It is treated of the last technology generation in signalling and it allows the subway to walk in an automatic way, without the driver’s” need, it explains. The contract, in agreement with Delleur, is of the order of 350 million euros and it will be concluded to the beginning of next year.


Alstom is also working in the implantation of a system of LRV in Brasília, that will tie the airport of the city to the Esplanada dos Ministérios. The government from Brasília signed a contract with the consortium Brastram, constituted by Alstom, TC / BR, Mendes Jr. and Road, for the first phase of the project of LRV. The participation of Alstom in that stage, according to Delleur, is about € 140 million.


Delleur counts that, with the proximity of the World cup, it felt an increase of the interest of the Brazilian municipal districts in investing in that enterprise type. Brasília will be the first city to operate a LRV, but Alstom is already discussing other projects similar with the city halls of Porto Alegre, (RS) Belo Horizonte (BH), Santos (SP), Vitória (ES) and Rio de Janeiro.


Until the moment, according to Alstom, 29 cities ordered a total of 1.221 LRVs Citadis manufactured by the company. LRVs of Brasília will be capable to transport more than 400 passengers for vehicle. The company calculates that LRVs of Brasília should receive of 120.000 the 200.000 passengers a day. Alstom will also supply to the project LRV the electric power systems, as well as systems of telecommunications, signalling, automatic bilhetagem and the Center of Operational Control.
