The construction of the stretch of the Senator Vicente Vuolo Railway (Ferronorte), which shall connect the municipalities of Alto Araguaia and Rondonópolis, now has 40% of its work completed. The distance between the two cities is 260 kilometers. This railway is an important transport modal which has long been awaited by the products and industrial activities of Mato Grosso, as this shall help to transport production with much lower freight costs than those for road transport.
Last week, the Brazilian Environment Institute (Instituto Brasileiro de Meio Ambiente – IBAMA) issued a license for the installation of a terminal of operator América Latina Logística (ALL), in Itiquira, through which the tracks shall pass on their way to Rondonópolis. The total investment for the construction of this section has been estimated at R$ 800 million, according to the director of the National Transport Infrastructure Department (Departamento Nacional de Infraestrutura de Transportes – Dnit), Luiz Antônio Pagot. He says that some 60 km have already been leveled, considering that the tracks have already been laid over 40 km. We now have almost half the total work already completed. The construction of the Itiquira terminal shall get under way later this month, and the work should be completed in 6 months.
The license issued by Ibama, according to the superintendent of this institution for the State of Mato Grosso, Ramiro Martins Costa, has considered a whole package of environmental and social impact. He explains that the Installation License (IL) includes the Prior License (PL) and also considers the hearings carried out with the community.

He adds that, after the construction of the terminal, it shall also be required to clear the Operation License (OL). The area as assigned by Itiquira City Hall, which lies 14 km from the city centre, has a total land area of 73 hectares. According to ALL, the capacity of the terminal shall be that of loading one train with 120 carriages per day, with the possibility of a gradual increase up to two trains per day. About 200 employees from Itiquira shall be working on the project.
Another railway investment which has been planned for the state of Mato Grosso is the extension of the railway from Rondonópolis to Cuiabá, an additional 200 km. According to the State Secretary for Intermodal Transport Logistics (Selit), Francisco Vuolo, this work shall cost approximately R$ 750 million, and shall get under way after the completion of the section between Alto Araguaia and Rondonópolis, which has been scheduled for 2012. He says that the possibility of transporting passengers in this section, as well as grain and meal, is being considered. The company that shall be executing this work shall be chosen after the completion of the environmental impact studies, being carried out by the Government of the State of Mato Grosso.
