Building railroads is more important for the country than duplicating or expanding the road network. That is the view of Empresa de Planejamento e Logística (EPL) Chairman Bernardo Figueiredo. For him, the country’s logistics is inverted, because the long-distance transport is conducted through highways and railroads are used only for short distances.
“And any analysis will show the opposite: that the railroad is more competitive in the long distance and the highway in the short distance. We have a very high expenditure with logistics due to this inversion, we are performing transportation in the wrong way, and the highway is structurally more expensive than other long distance modalities” he says.
According to Figueiredo, a single train can replace up to 300 trucks in cargo transport. In his view, it is necessary urgently to arrange the shift from road to rail transport, because that will positively impact ports, promote the decongestion of roads, improve the crossing of urban centers and reduce logistics costs. . “We have to urgently build an internal network, allowing that the pressure imposed on the road [system] today is reduced and the load is transferred to lower costs for the railways.”
