ANTT receives contributions for MG-BA railroad

The project of the railroad that will connect the cities of Belo Horizonte (state of Minas Gerais) to Candeias, in the metropolitan area of Salvador (state of Bahia), has attracted interest from dozens of businessmen, representatives of public and private institutions and industry’s technicians in a participatory meeting held on this Thursday (July 23) in the city of Feira de Santana (state of Bahia). The meeting, sponsored by the National Land Transport Agency (ANTT – Agência Nacional de Transportes Terrestres), aimed to gather subsidies for the project.

Feira de Santana, a city of Bahia, is the main point of intersection of the railroad and a strong logistics hub for the region. The event allowed local society to contribute to the preliminary studies that will be used in the process of concession to the private sector of the railroad stretch between the cities of Belo Horizonte and Candeias, near the Port of Aratu in the Recôncavo Baiano region. Next Friday (July 26), there will be a second meeting on the railroad, this time in the city of Montes Claros (state of Minas Gerais), in order to hear suggestions from population.

High performance – According to the superintendent of Infrastructure and Freight Railroad Transportation Services of ANTT, Jean Mafra dos Reis, who chaired the meeting at Feira de Santana, the intention is to complete the bidding by the end of this year so the agreement can be signed in the first half of 2014. Reis explains that the axis Minas Gerais/Bahia will have a railroad with high capacity of transportation, leading to reduced travel times and hence transport costs.

With 1,419 km long, the railroad will pass through 52 cities, 27 in Minas and 25 in Bahia. The project also includes the construction of maintenance yards every 300 kilometers.

Also, it will expand the carriage of products from the region, including iron ore and other commodities. The estimated investment is from $4.71 billion to $5.37 billion, according to engineering project of the National Land Transport Agency (ANTT – Agência Nacional de Transportes Terrestres), depending on the path.

In Bahia, the stretch covers the cities of Orange Sebastião Laranjeiras, Urandi, Pindai, Candiba, Guanambi, Manoel Vitorino, Barra da Estiva, Iramaia, Maracás, Marcionílio Souza, Iaçu, Boa Vista do Tupim, Itatim, Santa Teresinha, Castro Alves, Rafael Jambeiro, Ipecaetá, Antônio Cardoso, Feira de Santana, Anguera, Conceição do Jacuípe, Santo Amaro, Amélia Rodrigues, São Sebastião do Passé and Candeias.

Still in Bahia, the railroad will share 200 kilometers with the East-West Integration Railroad, under construction by Valec – public company under the Ministry of Transport – between the cities of Guanambi and Manoel Vitorino. In Minas Gerais, in the 70-km initial stretch between the cities of Capitão Eduardo e Sete Lagoas, the railroad path that already exists at the site will be used. The project includes improved signaling and fence construction along the track, in order to delimit the right-of-way.
