More two Chinese trains began operating on Rio de Janeiro Supervia

Two Chinese trains, acquired by the Rio de Janeiro State Government (Brazil), began operating on Supervia railways, totalizing eight trains at the beginning of the year. The two trains will operate with assistance during a week so the technical team can assess its performance before they can be put on regular operation.

The Supervia fleet renovation process continues in an accelerated pace. The passengers of the trains from Rio de Janeiro have at their disposal 78 new trains with HVAC system, and the prevision for the end of 2015 is that 42 trains will be added to this number.
-This renovation process will be continuous, so we can offer more quality and commodity to the passenger – declares Carlos Roberto Osorio, secretary of Transports.

The arrival of those state-of-the-art models allowed 53 trains to be withdrawal from operation. This process will continue until 2016, when it is expected that all fleet will have HVAC system installed. The Chinese trains have internal passage, a system that does not allow the doors opening while traveling, internal cameras, luggage racks and LED panels. When the renovation is finished, the trains’ average age will be reduced from 25 to 15 years.

Investing on modernization – The State have been buying new trains to invest on the railway system modernization. Four Chinese trains have arrived on Rio de Janeiro on January, and more 34 trains are expected to arrive at Rio de Janeiro. The trains are part of a batch composed of 70 ordered trains.

The system recover has begun at 2009, when the World Bank had funded US$ 166 million to buy 30 Chinese trains produced by the successful bidder, National Machinery Import & Export Corporation. This negotiation entered to the World Bank history as the fastest public bidding realized on South America and with the lower cost price. The trains’ arrival has increased the total of seats: there are more 288 million seats every day. The Bank had funded, on 2012, the acquisition of 70 trains with an investment of US$ 306 million. It totalized a purchase of 100 trains by the State Government.

Until the end of 2015, all fleet will be acclimatized – Supervia acquired 10 national trains for the fleet modernization plain. They are already in operation.

On 2007, Supervia transported an average of 325 million passengers every day and had only 10 acclimatized trains. It was only 6% of 173 trains. Nowadays, there are 201 trains and 144 are acclimatized. It is 70% of the fleet. Until the end of 2015, it is expected that all fleet will be acclimatized.

The investments on the railway system modernization – including reforms on stations and on signaling – totalize R$ 3.3 billion.
