Mato Grosso do Sul State Government calculates that it will take R$ 4 billion to repair the railways

Grain transport is suspended on the railways of Mato Grosso do Sul since 2009. About 20 million liters of diesel left to be transported by trains due to poor quality of the rails.

According to the concessionaire that manages the railway line since April, the repairs are done every year, but the company believes that the current maintenance is unsatisfactory, primarily for the transport of fuel, which must follow a specific resolution with greater rigidity. The new command of the concession intends to have more rigorous maintenance of rails, locomotives and wagons.

Currently there are 1600 km of track between Corumbá, Ponta Pora and Três Lagoas. Along the way they are transported cellulose, ore and steel. Meanwhile, between Campo Grande and Ponta Pora, 340 km of trails are no longer being used.

In a meeting on Monday (23), state government, federal deputies, senators, secretaries and the company that administers the South Mato Grosso rail network discussed the creation of a pact. The goal is to find a solution to the train remains an alternative to the production flow.
Within two months the company will make a study of necessary investments for rails to become more used to transport products. The challenge is to become more competitive this type of transport, especially to flow state’s production.

“We have a geographical problem today in the state because there is a concentration of shipments in the southern state, so that it is easier and cheaper to go by truck to Maringá to export at the port of Paranaguá. If it is more feasible to go to Campo Grande and use the railway that is available today, obviously this will be done”, said the President of Rumo América Latina Logística.

The next steps to recover the railroad competitiveness will be taken only after the study to be done by the concessionary company.
