Grant to help students in study of railroad industry

21/01 – Canadian National railroad has donated $575,000 to the University of Wisconsin-Superior`s Transportation and Logistics program. UWS, which announced the donation Friday, will use the money to recruit and prepare more students for careers in the railroad industry. `I`m excited,` said Jill Schoer, UWS assistant chancellor for university advancement. `This is a great example of the public-private partnership, and this is the largest gift we have ever received from a corporation. CN believes very strongly in this program.` This is the second major donation CN has made to the UWS Transportation and Logistics program. In September 2002, the company donated $150,000. The school used that money to create an endowment fund to support student research, provide scholarships and pay for program development such as the purchase of specialized simulation software and field experiences. `As a longtime supporter of transportation education, we at CN are very proud to more than double our support of the University of Wisconsin-Superior,` said Gordon Trafton, CN`s senior vice-president, U.S. Region, in a news release. `It is important for students studying transportation and logistics to learn about the cost, service and environmental advantages of shipping by rail and about the contributions the rail industry makes to our nation´s economy.` UWS began the transportation and logistics program after receiving a $900,000 three-year federal grant in 1998. The bachelor´s degree program has 63 students.
