MRS is analyzing the possibility of building general cargo terminals in Santos, Belo Horizonte and Sepetiba. According to Julio Fontana, president of the company, the terminals will help leverage the general cargo business, mainly in the container sector.
The study that is most advanced is in Santos, where a 350,000 m2 workshop area will be used. There would be storage capacity for 9,000 EUTs as well as three silos for 170,000 tons of grains each. For its part, the area in Belo Horizonte has not yet been decided on, although it could be larger than the one in Santos.
This year, mining cargo will represent 60% of the company’s total freight volume, whereas in the past it represented nearly 70%. “This demonstrates the growth of general cargo, because overall the company is increasing the volume transported at an average of 6% per year,” Fontana reported. MRS expected to transport 115 million tons through 2006.
