Taiwan´s long-awaited bullet train running at speeds of up to 300 kph went into service Friday, ushering in a new era in travel between Taipei in the island´s north and its second-biggest city of Kaohsiung in the south.
The $ 15 billion project, using Japanese shinkansen technology, will greatly shorten the 345-km journey between Taipei and Kaohsiung from several hours to less than 90 minutes.
Thousands of passengers emerged at Banciao Station in Taipei County to experience the advanced rail system with improved seating comfort and facilities.

I´ve been waiting for this moment for a long time, said one train enthusiast surnamed Chen before he boarded the earliest 7 a.m. Kaohsiung-bound 700T train that was nearly full. It is fun. I´ve tried it several times in Japan and I like it very much.
The builder of the system, Taiwan High Speed Rail Co., said commercial trial runs with half-price fares are expected to last about 14 days or so and will operate 19 times each day in both directions.
These trial runs are aimed at testing the smooth integration of the entire system, said THSRC Chief Executive Officer Ou Chin-der.
