The implementation of a Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) in the cities of Contagem and Betim, in the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte, has the route set. At a meeting held yesterday between the various organs, it was determined that the extension of the new mode of transportation will be 12 km. The route is from the Eldorado station to the Alterosas neighborhood, in Betim.
According to the Contagem mayor, Marilia Campos, this new route will bring great benefits to the city residents and those who use the metro. “Today, the metro carries 170 000 passengers per day. With the LRV and the extension of its section, the ability to transport passengers per day will increase to 111 000 passenger”.
According to the mayor, the purpose of the meeting was to receive a positive opinion about the viability of LRV by the Metropolitan Agency, which is responsible for promoting the integrated development of the Greater Belo Horizonte. Marilia Campos said the agency approved the project. Also according to the mayor, if the LRV is deployed, the cost will be for US$ 336 million. If the metro extension is picked, the investment will reach US$ 1 billion. The resources for the new mode of transport should leave the municipal, state and federal safes.
