The proper time experienced by the logistics sector in the market, even in an economic crisis experienced last year is also reflected by the Ferrovia Centro-Atlantica (FCA), controlled by Vale, which is under contract to transport 1.5 million tons of grain for three years with Louis Dreyfus Commodities (LDC).
The partnership is part of the training that the company developed for the lines to receive more volumes of grain. “We designed this plan to train the system last year, and now we begin to develop it. The idea is to further expand the ability to move freight by rail”, said the business manager of the FCA, André Ravara.
The agreement will represent an increase of 120% of the volume transported by the FCA for Dreyfus, and 10% of the total grain-handling company, which increased for the first time the scope of the contract with a customer.
Last year, the company operated 210 thousand tons of grain, and this year, with the partnership, the forecast is for 525 thousand tons, of which 425 thousand tons will be captured in the states of Mato Grosso and Goias, and shipped on the railroad terminals of Araguari and Uberlandia.

The other 100 thousand will be captured in the region of Pirapora (MG) and embedded in local Intermodal Terminal (TIP), launched by Vale and the FCA last year, with investments of US$ 162 million. Ravara also commented: “We have recovered this excerpt that was abandoned, and as the federal government will provide more rail track, certainly we will analyze”, he said.
Louis Dreyfus Commodities will use the storage space of Vale in the port of Tubarao, in Vitória (ES), where the freight goes to the outside. From January to September 2009, FCA accounted the movement of 4 million tons of bulk cargo, 17% more than the same period of 2008.
The company has more than 8 thousand kilometers of railway and covers seven states. The fleet has about 500 locomotives and 12 thousand freight cars. In grain, the FCA carries fuel, sugar, cement and siderurgical products. “We represent a major logistics corridor that connects the Southeast and Northeast of the country”, said Ravara.
