Cariri’s train will have controlled concession

Cariri’s metro, which began operating on a trial on December 1, will be administered by a private company. Metrofor, which manages the operation on the line between Crato and Juazeiro, has been authorized by the Legislature to publish a notice of public tender for the selection of the company that will administer the system. However, the company does not confirm the possible change in administration.

The governor Cid Gomes, who yesterday (7) was in Cariri, explained that this is not a privatization, as was previously speculated. It is a “controlled concession” process which, as governor, the fulfillment of requirements by the state and the company’s winning bid. “One of these commitments is to maintain the fare at US$ 0.57”, said Gomes.

The governor said that, starting from next Monday (12), the Cariri’s metro will work in three shifts, morning, afternoon and evening until 10.30 pm (local time). Still, it remains as trials. Currently, the train is running only in the mornings, from 8 am to noon.

The press officer from Metrofor, Fernando Mota, said that the expansion of service hours is the continuity of the assisted operation that aims to evaluate the system as, for example, better observation of the flow of passengers. Mota said the average passenger per day is around 800 people.

With the new schedule that starts at 6 am and goes until 10:30 pm, the flow should increase, presumably Mota, explaining that in the next two weeks at the times of 12 to 16 hours and from 19 to 23 hours, the tickets are free, as has occurred since the inauguration of the transport.

For the mechanical Quelé Edmilson, who lives in Alto da Penha, in Crato, the train is one more alternative transportation between Juazeiro and Crato,  two cities that are served by bus lines as well as alternative transport like vans and topique. “We remember the old train, which made the line to Fortaleza”, Edmilson recalls.

Mauro Aranha, of Metrofor, says that every day, the community is becoming aware that the metro is a safe and efficient transport. “With the inauguration of the new schedules, passenger flow will improve”, Aranha says.

Vehicles for Fortaleza

Barbalha is manufacturing the first cars of Fortaleza’s metro, which will replace the old locomotives on the line linking Caucaia to Joao Felipe Station.

The State Governor, Cid Gomes, visited yesterday the Bom Sinal factory, responsible for the assembly of air-conditioned trains, called the Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) with its own engine (automotive).

Bom Sinal is the same company that manufactured the metro train for Cariri, which is in circulation in the region and improve the form of passenger transport in the region. The engineer of the company, Osvaldo Neves Quintián, explained to the governor that a little modification was made. “The new engine of the cars is more compact, which gives more aesthetic to the train”, explains the engineer. The first six cars, according to Bom Sinal, will be delivered within 45 days.

Sobral’s Metro

After delivering the cars of the Fortaleza’s metro, Bom Sinal begins the construction of the compositions for the Sobral’s metro, which is also being deployed an urban rail system.

There will be two lines in the urban area of the county. One connecting the  neighborhoods of Sinha Sabóia and Cohab II (in the southeast of the city) to the Sumaré (southwest of town), passing through the periphery of the Centre and other crowded neighborhoods. There will be seven stations in total. The other will attend José Euclides, and strategic locations, such as Grendene and also the Centro de Convenções.

Once concluded the car supply to Ceará, Bom Sinal will start to manufacture the compositions of the electric train of Recife (PE). With the increasing demand, the industry is building new sheds to meet all the demand.
