The remaining 180 kilometers out of the approximately 860 kilometers of the North-South Railroad which cross the Tocantins state are to be delivered by October. Currently, 90% of the railroad are concluded in the State and this last section is to be inaugurated in Porto Nacional, 66 kilometers from Palmas. From this city until São Luís (MA), where grains and other Tocatins products are sent for export, there are approximately 1.2 thousand kilometers of rails. The information was provided yesterday by the business manager of Vale – one of the project concessionaires-, Gustavo Fiúza, during the 34th Agribusiness for Export Seminar (Agroex), carried out at Palácio Araguaia.
In Goiás, however, if it intends to keep the promise to inaugurate the Goiás section of the North-South Railroad by the end of this year, the Lula government will have to step on the gas. The 10th balance of the Growth Acceleration Program (Programa de Aceleração do Crescimento) – PAC, disclosed on the 2nd by the federal government itself, shows that not even half of the execution goal established for April 30th of this year was accomplished.
Export
According to Fiúza, the Tocantins producer exported through the Porto Franco (MA) and this years the load started to be shipped from Pátio Multimodal de Colinas do Tocantins, 274 kilometers from the state Capital. “More and more the railroads is coming closer to the producer and offering more possibilities for the exporters. Consequently, the volume of loads exported every year will increase, providing competitivity to the State”, he said.
With the implementation of the North-South, Fiúza highlighted that the producer may also pay a freight, depending on the section, up to 30% cheaper than in the road transportation. “The railroad cost is more accessible than the road transportation, mainly because we transport in large scale, where we can make, for example, a composition with 80 cars. This way, it is cheaper for the producer”, he explained.
Storage
Still according to the Vale manager, the benefit of exporting through the North-South is also due to the gain in storage. “The railroad has a composition of 80 cars and each one of them carries 80 tons (t). Therefore we can transport in a composition the equivalent to 320 trucks loaded with soybeans. Every time you increase this transportation scale, you reduce the costs for the producer. This is the railroad benefit”, he highlighted.
Fiúza completed observing that the goal of the North-South is to increase the exporter’s competitivity, offering a regular transportation, which does not depend on seasonality.
“The railroad is prepared for large size exports. The producer will have a guarantee of constant flow. And the road transportation will also benefit a lot, because the truck driver, instead of performing a large transportation with long distances, will make several small sections to feed the railroad. He will be able to complete the load in shorter distances and in more times”, he stated. Vale’s business manager also mentioned that with the railroad, Tocantins can export other loads and not only grains, for example, meat.
