The Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Instituto Brasileiro do Meio Ambiente e dos Recursos Naturais Renováveis – Ibama) has authorized Vale to build the work sites for the doubling of the Carajás Railway. According to Ibama, the installation license was signed by the president of this institution, Abelardo Bayma, and refers to the construction of the main work sites of the railway in the municipalities of Santa Rita and Bom Jesus das Selvas, both in the state of Maranhão.
This year, Vale should invest a total of US$ 2.654 billion in logistics, to support the plan for the expansion of transport of iron ore. These funds amount to 20.6% of the total expected volume of cash to be invested by the mining company this year. By 2015, the company expects to expand the logistics capacity from the current 100 million tones per year to 230 million tones per year.
