The construction of the Ferronorte tracks until Cuiabá will have the technical, environmental and economical feasibility study elaborated by the state government in the next 18 months. A draft of the cooperation term was provided by the Transportation Ministry, Paulo Sérgio Passos, to the governor Silval Barbosa, allowing the performance of the survey by the State government. With that, the arrival of the railroad at the Capital gains more strength and finally stops being an old dream of the Baixada Cuiabana. The study will cost up to R$ 5 million and was allowed after the return of the section, which was under the jurisdiction of América Latina Logística (ALL), to the Federal government.
The announcement of the possibility of construction is a reason for celebration for different segments of the productive and political class of the State. The president of the Pró-Ferrovia Forum, Francisco Vuolo, states that the benefits may only be measured when the transportation is implemented, but that the arrival of the tracks means development.
We are not going to transport only grains, we will transport development, added value products, technology and with that jobs and income to the Mato Grosso population.

The governor Silval Barbosa (PMDB) ratified the importance of the railroad until Cuiabá as a way to change the State production, reducing costs and increasing the competitiveness. The president of the Mato Grosso Bar Association, Cláudio Stábile, defends the arrival until Cuiabá as a way to solve one of the largest bottlenecks in the economy. No segment will be privileged, the whole population will benefit. There will be jobs, income and reduction in the cost of living. The railroad will take our production, but will also bring freight from other large center at more competitive prices.
For the Federação da Agricultura e Pecuária de Mato Grosso (Famato), the railroad will be an important mean for the import of supplies and production flow, both to reduce the costs and as a way to free the roads. The estimation is that the arrival of Ferronorte until the Federal District of Cuiabá will cost between R$ 700 and R$ 800 millions, an amount that is similar to what ALL is investing in the expansion of the Alta Araguaia railroad until Rondonópolis, which work, according to the minister Paulo Passos, is advanced and will follow the delivery schedule in the middle of 2012.
On the dispute – The return of the jurisdiction of the section from Rondonópolis does not remove ALL from the dispute for the concession of the tracks operation. ALL’s CEO, Paulo Basílio, says that the company gave up the section because it did not have conditions to comply with the timeframes for the construction, but that this does not exclude it from the bidding process for the cars operation.
The general director of Agência Nacional de Transporte Terrestre (ANTT), Bernardo Figueiredo, confirms this possibility. We are heading to a model in which the one which operates does not necessarily needs to be the one responsible for the construction, this way, ALL can be a candidate to the concession. We want to stimulate the competitiveness.
The economist Vivaldo Lopes considers important to define which company will manage the tracks. According to him, ALL’s exit was not a very applicable decision once it is one of the most aggressive companies in the segment and has obtained positive results over the last years.
