To prevent problems with the increment of 30 thousand passengers foreseen due to the expansion to Novo Hamburgo, Trensurb is studying to buy new trains in an investment that could reach R$ 450 million. The new vehicles, more modern and with higher transportation capacity, would only be available within two years if the resource would be released by the federal government.
The transportation of passengers between stations located between Porto Alegre and São Leopoldo is done in 25 trains of four cars each. The vehicles were purchased in Japan in the 80’s.
At peak hours, even with minimum 4-minute headways, there is overcrowding at some hours. In the most critical sections, passengers often cannot get onto the vehicles. – We work with two hypotheses. The inclusion of seven or eight compositions in the existing fleet, or full replacement. All depends on the resources we can get from the federal government in PAC2 (Growth Acceleration Program) – informs the superintendent of Development and Expansion of Trensurb, Humberto Kasper.
The cost for the new machines would be high. Kasper estimates the value of a new train in R$ 18 million, which would make the total renewal an investment of about R$ 450 million. At the same time, it would represent a 50% increase in fleet capacity, since the new vehicles would have six cars. As the first two stations of the northern expansion section – Rio dos Sinos and Liberdade- should start operations by mid-next year, Trensurb plans short-term measures to circumvent the overcrowding. The reduction of the headway to 3.5 minutes is contemplated as well as an intensification of the so-called “carousel system”, which consists of trains departing from intermediate points of the route, to serve areas of greatest movement.
