Between 2009 and 2010, the average speed of the Subway trains declined by up to 7%, and there was also an increase in the waiting time between trains.
The most significant fall was on Line 2 (the Green Line), for which the average declined from 29.6 km/h to 27.5 km/h in 2010, which works out at a reduction of 7%. On Line 3 (the Red Line), the reduction came to 4%, the speed having declined from 33.9 km/h to 32.7 km/h.
According to the National Public Transport Association (Associação Nacional de Transportes Públicos – ANTP), the São Paulo Subway is already operating at full capacity. Last year, according to the agency, there was a spate of occupational incidents and faults that have played a part in reducing the speed.
In a Press Release, the São Paulo Subway Company stated that the performance has got worse due to the increase in the number of rainy days.
